There are so many similarities when comparing other parts of our everyday lives to our bodies, that I think we take them for granted.
The idea that one’s finances, business, spirituality, education, and relationships can relate to our health and physical well being, seems very significant to me.
I will be talking about why I believe most individuals today are dying from a financial cancer that has overtaken our passions, dreams, relationships, money, and how we can kill this sickness at its source.
Please note that I am not a doctor or a physician, and if I make any reference to health in general it is from my own research and experience. I am an entrepreneur, not a doctor.
I believe there is more to changing our wallet’s health than meets the eye, and that is why today I will be talking about how to improve your financial wellness.
Let’s get right into this shall we?
Spiritual Well Being & Money
As I dive deep into the rich exploration of money and financial freedom, I have always progressed with the understanding that “How I do anything is how I do everything.” (Thanks to T. Harv Eker for that one)
This is not a black and white statement, but it hits home so hard for me that I ask myself the same question many times a day because of it.
That question is, “If I am doing this activity or responsibility poorly, what else am I doing poorly?”
If I am willing to lower my standards in one area of my life, what is stopping me from doing so in another, and so on? I think you see my daily struggle for further growth here.
It is convicting, and if one area of my life can be connected to another in such a simple fashion, another question arises, “How are my finances affecting my health and happiness?”
How Do I Know If I am Dying Financially?
When I look at my bank account, do I have a depressed expression on my face? When I spend money, am I stressing about how I will pay my expenses, am I feeling guilty when I go shopping for myself?
Do I feel like a fake when I buy gifts for others? Are my relationships suffering because money has become such a negative part of my life? Am I losing sleep over the debt I have?
Let’s recap, with all of this in mind, what does this make me?
- Guilt Ridden
- Feeling like a fake
- Feeling alone
- Losing sleep (Which really will have immediate effects on my physical health!)
I don’t know about you, but I know personally that if I have even one of these things weighing on my shoulders, my energy, motivation and success suddenly takes a significant hit.
Your Wallet is Dying and So Are You!
If I am suffering, everything in my life struggles. I may not be the center of the universe, but I am certainly the center of my life because well… It’s my life.
Our wallets (or purses for you ladies) are very much connected to us, literally.
My wallet is a very good receiver, but it is also a very good giver, Too good a giver.
It will not argue when my hard-earned money is taxed, it will not attempt to stop people from stealing from me, and it has no opinions.
The cancer that eats away our finances is the same one that is destroying our health today! If we are living a life of daily defeat, our wallets grow thin.
If I am never growing past my problems and overcoming financial obstacles, my health suffers because the joy of life gets sucked away!
There is no joy in daily ruin and regret! People don’t want to be fat, they want to be fit and healthy. The same goes with money.
No one wants to take a step back and see that they are financially in ruin, that is a bad place to be. But seeing no way out of that is by far even worse!
My health is directly proportionate to my joy and contentment in life.
“Why should I manage my money, invest, apply for a new job, clean my home, or sustain healthy relationships with others, if my life is miserable anyway?”
“Why should I keep up my health when I am a failure, depressed, in debt, and have no way to improve my life?”
See how everything is connected?
The Cure to Wallet Cancer
Thankfully, happiness is a choice!
I don’t have to stay in the same dark hole, I can live in success and prosperity! There is nothing stopping me from climbing out except my own will.
Our emotions play a part in feeling like the world has come down on us and we are crushed forever, but that is a lie spread by our own subconscious alarm system that we have had since we were kids.
It is there to keep us safe, it is not there to help us grow.
It also doesn’t know the difference between “safe” and “isolated”. I might be safer in a box, but I have very little room to do what I want. My growth and success with be severely stunted.
The real cure to this wallet cancer lies in 4 key places:
- Education (Having the tools to succeed)
- Mindset (Not letting self get in the way, climbing out of the box)
- Spirituality (Relationship with Jesus, God, and inner peace)
- Pulling the Trigger (Action, making changes, etc.)
Taking action is by far the most crucial factor to kill wallet cancer at it’s source.
Many people know about financial literacy; they know why they are where they are today. The reason so many people never grow and improve their lives is not because of a lack of education, it’s because they never apply that knowledge.
Now here’s a fun one for you, I bet after you just read this you said to yourself, “Yep, I know that.”
Guess what, that is what many of us do when we hear life changing information, and if you are like me, a lot of that goes in one ear and goes out the other. Please don’t misunderstand me here.
I think most people believe themselves intelligent and capable of just about anything, but I think there are many instances when we have become prideful due to this belief.
I’m not talking about rocket science, this is common knowledge, but it’s not Applied Knowledge. We live in a world of intellectuals who have never grown with experience. They know a lot, but never grew.
That’s the difference between the intelligent people who succeed and those who fail. One group showed up, the other didn’t.
Becoming A Life-Giving Tree
The point of this article is not to put down those who ignore sound advice or utilize the financial tools in their possession.
The point was to enlighten you and show you how there are problems in life that are levels deeper than they appear.
The greatest achievement one could hope for is to become a vibrant, strong tree capable of giving shelter, resources and relief to others.
We all remember a time when we sat under a shady tree on a hot day and were deeply appreciative of its being there.
That tree took time to grow, but the result was epic!
Here are my recommendations on some very easy steps to start doing right now to kill that wallet cancer.
- Start managing money smarter and more effectively. Track transactions, save, and get out of debt with Mvelopes. I have used these guys for years and absolutely love this software. You can take it on the go with your phone to keep track of your spending and budget as well!
- Start learning the difference between an Asset & a Liability. This is the key to getting out of the rat race and achieving financial freedom.
Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad Poor Dad and other useful books) has taught these principles for years and if you have never read his books before, you are in for a treat!
- Start shaping your mind for success and root out the negativity and doubt that has hindered your growth. T. Harv Eker has written several fantastic books on this very subject, and it remains one of the world’s best sellers to this day.
- Begin improving relationships. Problems with money can leave us flat and feeling alone in this world. Gary Chapman has created revolutionary books that explain how each of us communicates with different “Love Languages” towards each other. This is absolutely essential if you want to express love (not just romantic feelings) towards those you care about.
Let’s not forget about our happiness in this life, other people can be great sources of love and encouragement. We need this in life, our success depends on it!
