What Success Means Today: Going Beyond Average And Being Smart
What is success? What does it mean to you? Why does success seem to come and go so fast? All of these questions, while completely understandable, are a result of my mindset not pushing me in the direction that I want. The topic of what success means today has different meaning depending on who you talk to.
If you want success in your life, no matter the area, I believe it is important to not only become familiar with the term, “Successful”, but to decide what that will look like for you.
I have written extensive reviews of what I believe to be the best books on this subject. Check out my full review of the Top 5 Positive Mindset Books for this year! They are best selling and highly rated to help you “think” wealthy.
That’s why I will be talking about What Success Means Today, and how being Successful goes beyond being average!
Knowing What Success Really Is
First things first, what is success? Is it a fancy word? A Noun? An object of people’s attention and affection? The answer: Yes.
Success is all of these things and more, but that doesn’t mean that it is true for you. The objective truth here, or the truth of the matter regardless of opinion, is that success means to do something well.
The subjective truth, or the meaning of the word according to opinion, is that success means something different for everyone.
Because of this, one person could have tons of money, influence, possessions, and loving people surrounding them, and never see themselves as “successful”. To them, their image of success, is different from everyone else’s.
This is not to say that you are successful simply because of all I have, or the relationships I have, but that having an unsupportive belief about success isn’t healthy and won’t bring me joy.
Thus, it is important to have a good understanding about what success really means to us personally.
Why This Is Important
Because being successful in life means different things, it is vital to my success moving forward to understand when I am “successful”. It is also equally important to understand who I am, and the kind of nature that I possess.
Sometimes, I really don’t give myself enough credit. There are days when I feel like a failure, or felt really lazy during the day, but when I write down everything I did, and the successful things I did during my day, I realize how amazingly active I was.
Maybe you are like me, maybe you hold to high of a standard for yourself to notice how many actions you are doing daily that move you towards your goals.
Being the driven man that I am, I value things based on the size or magnitude of something. When someone has done something incredibly big for me, I assign greater value to it.
When someone has done something smaller or it took less effort, I appreciated it and accepted it thankfully, but it wasn’t the same. I think this is relate-able to many people in life.
Defining Success, Not The Other Way Around
This is why understanding what success really means is so important. If you are only seeing the “Big” successes in life, you miss all the little things that amounted to those larger achievements. Losing 50 pounds is a big achievement to me!
But unless you have the incredible ability to instantly lose that weight overnight, I’m pretty sure there were quite a few other small successes that lead to that amazing moment.
I’ve realized that I define “success”, and that “success” or being “successful”, doesn’t define me. Deciding what success will mean to me, will only create more joy in my life. I choose when I am successful, and no one except God himself is going to say otherwise.
One of my favorite things I learned from T. Harv Eker, (A famous teacher and writer) was this simple affirmation, “My Word is Law in the Universe”.
When I say something, it means something. When I say success means something to me, it does. If you say that you are beautiful, athletic, intelligent, talented, and that you are already successful, you are.
How You Can Reach Success
There are many ways to achieve success in life, financially, spiritually, physically, in my relationships, etc. But that’s not the point.
The point is that while the tools that can help you reach your goals exist, until I decide that I am successful, I have accomplished nothing but waste my time and life force.
How do I reach success? It’s not exactly floating in outer space. It is something found internally. It’s a decision, not an action. How many people do you know that have achieved wonders, but when they were interviewed, expressed a spirit of discontentment and defeat?
You can change a mirror to make you look completely different, but that mirror will not change me internally.
Do you feel like that today? Maybe you are working on a business, aiming to lose weight, working on a relationship, or learning about new things. In any case, I encourage you to begin tracking what you are doing on a daily basis.
Techniques For Success
Keep a journal about your day, list 5 things at the end of each day that you are proud of. If you feel like a disappointment, you can look back, and see that you are successful.
I tend to be hard on myself when I make a mistake or don’t do what I should, but when it comes to acknowledging myself, listing even the most ridiculous things has made all the difference.
I can remember learning this and laughing about what was being said.
The first person to tell me about this was an instructor with a big educational company, and he said, “If you had a good bowel movement that day, you celebrate that successful bowel movement! List it under your successes! Don’t be so hard on yourselves during the day!”
I’m paraphrasing from memory here, but I think you get the point. 😀
What Success Means Today, Being Successful Isn’t Average
If I want to be successful in my life, I need to give up the idea of being “average”.
The average person shares beliefs with everyone else, not being original and selling himself out to fit in.
Defining success requires an attitude of originality, which everyone has!
If you think you aren’t original, or don’t think you have anything of value to offer the world, that there might be a primary reason why success eludes you.
You are already successful, you just haven’t expanded your vision to see it yet.
If you want to be more successful, or begin seeing how successful you really are, begin investing in your education.
Start learning about how you can affirm yourself and begin setting yourself up for success daily! There are many books and resources that can help you with this!
Let me know what you think about this. Let me know what successes you celebrate daily! Are you struggling in this area? Let me know where you want to see yourself, and what success means to you!
As always, feel free to contact me and ask me any questions. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
